Employment Visa for Saudi Arabia


Employment Visa


  1. Passport should be valid for the length of the employment contract. Passport should have at least two (2) visa pages adjacent to each other.
  2. Separate Electronic Authorization for each speciality.
  3. One (1) recent passport size color photograph with a white background. Photograph(s) must be full-face shots in which the applicant is facing the camera directly.  Side or angled-views are NOT accepted. Guidelines for accepted photograph for Visa.
  4. A completed application form filled-out in CAPITAL LETTERS with a black ink pen or printed. Application forms  can be downloaded from the website at http://www.saudiembassy.net/. Please include your email address on the application.
  5. A reference note showing the number and the date of the employment visa issued from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or any of its branches in Jeddah or Dammam.
  6. The original letter from the company in Saudi Arabia sponsoring the applicant, certified both by the Saudi Chamber of Commerce and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  The letter MUST indicate the block visa number, date, position and the name of the person requested. If such a letter is submitted through a visa service agency, then the letter should include an authorization from the company allowing the agency to finish all the requirements to get the visa, block visa number and date.
  7. A certified and notarized copy of the applicants university degree/diploma, which MUST be validated by the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission (Tel. (703) 573-7226 or (571) 327-2522).  A certified and notarized copy of the training or technical diploma must be authenticated by the U.S. Department of State.  Diplomas need to be notarized by a Saudi Arabian Consulate in the United States. The fee is US $8.00 (eight dollars) per page, payable to “The Embassy of Saudi Arabia.” Cash and personal checks are not accepted.
  8. Diplomas issued by institutions outside the United States must be certified by the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission and the Saudi Arabian Embassy in the issuing country.
  9. A copy of the employment contract signed by both the sponsor and the applicant.
  10. Medical report (three copies) and lab reports (two copies), along with three (3) passport size color photographs with white background.  The medical report must be issued by a licensed physician certifying that the applicant is free of any contagious diseases. The physician must sign each copy of the medical report. The physician’s license number and address should appear on each copy of the medical form.   Medical reports should be used within three (3) months from the date of issuance.  Children under the age of sixteen (16) do not need a medical report.
  11. A police report issued within six (6) months with detailed information about applicant’s criminal record, if any.
  12. $14.00 (fourteen dollars) visa fees must be paid online through Enjaz website www.enjazit.com.sa or through any of the Visa Offices Registered with Enjaz.  The Consulate will not accept payments.  Please print receipt of payment which includes the order number and attach submit with documents.
  13. Select one entry rather than multiple entries, when using "ENJAZ" to apply for Employment Visa.  
  14. Log on to https://enjazit.com.sa/ . Click on “Apply for a visa to enter the Kingdom by individuals.” Complete the online request for an Employment visa. It is important to record the request number on the application and present it to the Consulate. Guideline for enjaz online application.
  15. All application forms must be typed in CAPITAL LETTERS.
  16. Minors (under 18 years of age) travelling alone or with one parent must submit a notarized letter of authorization, in either in Arabic or English, signed by both parents or legal guardians.

  4. Please use tape, paper clip, or ONE staple only to stick the photograph to the application. DO NOT USE more the one staple, and DO NOT use glue.
  5. DO NOT place staple on applicant’s face, forehead, or clothing. It should be placed at either top or side of the photograph.
  6. Photograph has to be recent, not older than 6 months.
    IF PHOTOGRAPH DOES NOT FULFILL ANY OF THESE GUIDELINES, VISA APPLICATION WILL BE REJECTED.

Business Visa

Business travelers should apply for a Business Visa (aka Cormmercial Visa) to Saudi Arabia. It is only valid for business visits, negotiations, investment talks, sales pitches, etc. If there is any kind of paid work involved, you need an Employment Visa (please see below). To obtain a business visa, you require:
  • a valid passport
  • a recent passport photograph
  • a completed application form
  • a letter from your employer, a Saudi company, a foreign chamber of commerce in Riyadh, etc. to prove your position and the purpose of your visit
  • payment of the visa fee
  • an online visa request number

Employment Visa

If you’d like to take up gainful employment in Riyadh, you need an Employment Visa. Like other Gulf States, Saudi Arabia has a sponsorship system (kafeel). Usually, your employer in Riyadh acts as your visa sponsor. The company applies for an employment permit from the Labor Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs first.
Other than that, an application for an Employment Visa requires:
  • a valid passport
  • a recent passport photograph
  • a completed application form
  • a letter from your sponsor, certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chamber of Commerce
  • a reference note with the number and date of your employment permit
  • certified and notarized copies of your diplomas
  • a copy of your job contract
  • a police certificate with up-to-date information on your criminal record
  • three copies of a medical report (including an HIV test)
  • payment of the visa fee
  • an online visa request number

Residence Visa

If you are an expat spouse accompanying your partner to Riyadh, you need to get a Residence Visa. Your husband will be your sponsor and guardian while you are in Saudi Arabia. There are some single expat women working in Riyadh, but the Saudi system probably couldn’t accommodate a male spouse with a working wife as the sponsor.
You must also have a permit from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before submitting an application. The rules are similar to those for getting an Employment Visa (see above). Instead of your professional qualifications and job contract, however, you need to attach an official proof of kinship (notarized marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc.).

General Advice

Please be aware that all these regulations are subject to change and may depend on the country you’re applying from. When in doubt, ask the nearest Saudi embassy. Remember to apply well in advance of your move to Riyadh. It may take several months to process your application.
Moreover, you may face certain difficulties in two cases. Firstly, people of Saudi descent who might have a claim to Saudi citizenship should always enter the country on a foreign passport, plus Saudi visa. The Saudi Embassy or Consulate in question may offer you a so-called “laissez passer” document to make your travel easier. However, this usually only helps you with entering the country and may then require you to get a Saudi passport before leaving again. The latter procedure can then take up to a year, during which you are not legally allowed to depart.
Secondly, Saudi Arabia does not really recognize dual nationality. If you have both the Saudi and another nationality, you will be treated like a Saudi citizen while living in Riyadh. Getting consular help is then extremely difficult or even impossible – enquire beforehand what to do as a person with dual citizenship. Lastly, people with an Israeli passport and even with Israeli visa stamps are likely to be denied entry. Officially, Saudi Arabia has an “anti-Zionist” policy. In fact, this can mean anti-Semitic prejudice.
Once you have received your visa, clarify for how long it will be valid. The date may be written using the Islamic calendar. If you are not familiar with it, find out the equivalent in the Gregorian calendar.

The Iqama

After arriving in Riyadh, you need an iqama – a residence permit / ID card – from the General Directorate of Passports or the local passport office. As a first-time applicant, you must fill out an application form and pay an administrative fee. Show your entry visa and your passport, and hand over two recent photographs. If you have come to Saudi Arabia on an Employment Visa, you also need your work permit from the Labor Office (ask your employer).
Usually, your employer helps you get an iqama. For further details, contact the passport office directly.
Just like with a visa, you should know when your iqama expires or must be renewed. The date is written in Arabic, using the lunar calendar, so have someone translate it for you, if necessary. Do carry your iqama with you at all times, as it proves that you live (and work) in Riyadh legally. If you lose it, report it to the police and apply for a replacement immediately. Failure to report the loss – or to apply for renewal at least three days before the card expires – can result in fines.

Exit Visa

Due to the Saudi sponsorship system, your employer may not only apply for an iqama on your behalf, but he may also keep your passport. If that is the case, you should keep several copies of your passport and visa stamp. The sponsor is also responsible for requesting an exit visa through the Ministry of Interior if you want to leave the country. So take care to keep your relations with your sponsor or employer as smooth as possible.

At today's Annual General Meeting of METRO AG, Olaf Koch, Chairman of the Management Board, informed shareholders about the company's progress made with its transformation process. Thanks as well to the expansion of the key growth drivers – online business and delivery services – METRO GROUP concluded its short financial year 2013 successfully despite the persistently difficult business conditions. "During 2013, we focused predominantly on creating added value for our customers," Koch said. "In doing so, we expanded existing activities as well as developed and implemented a large number of new ideas and concepts. We gained market share in many countries and improved our market position. We will move ahead with our transformation efforts during the financial year 2013/14 and underscore them with our new brand positioning, 'YOU & METRO'".  
During the short financial year 2013, METRO GROUP fulfilled its sales and EBIT guidance while still facing difficult retailing conditions: Sales adjusted for portfolio changes and currency effects rose by 0.9% to €45.0 billion. Reported sales totalled €46.3 billion, 2.2% below the level from the previous year's period (9M 2012: €47.4 billion). This can be attributed to the persistently challenging economic environment in many parts of Europe, recently completed portfolio changes as well as negative currency effects. At €728 million, EBIT before special items was €22 million above the previous year's figure. The net profit for the period before special items stands at €16 million (9M 2012: €165 million). The net profit for the period includes special items in the amount of €87 million (9M 2012: € 179 million). Adjusted for these special items, the net loss for the period comes in at € -71 million. This corresponds in the short financial year with the net loss for the period attributable to the shareholders of METRO AG. The earnings per share before special items came in at €0.03 (9M 2012: € 0.49). Adjusted for special items, the earnings per share amounted to € -0.22 (9M 2012: € -0.06). In order to strengthen the company's financial substance, the Management Board of METRO AG will propose to today's Annual General Meeting 2014 not to pay out a dividend from the short financial year 2013.
Solid start to financial year 2013/14 
During the first quarter of the financial year 2013/14, METRO GROUP created a solid foundation for its continued efforts to successfully transform the company. Group sales amounted to €18.7 billion, compared with €19.4 billion in Q1 2012/13. The decline of 3.3% resulted mainly from currency effects as well as the completed and announced portfolio changes (Real Eastern Europe: Russia, Romania and Ukraine as well as Media Markt China). Adjusted for currency and portfolio effects, METRO GROUP increased sales by 1.1%. Revenue share generated with own brands, online and delivery business continued to grow. EBIT before special items finished the period under review at €1,073 million and, as forecast, below the level for the previous year's period (€1,273 million) due to lower real estate income. EBIT climbed to €1,094 million during Q1 2013/14, compared with €985 million in Q1 2012/13. 
Supervisory Board elections 
The agenda for today's Annual General Meeting includes an election for an additional member to the Supervisory Board. Dr Fredy Raas is to be elected for the first time to the Supervisory Board of METRO AG. Raas joined the Board by court appointment at the end of July. His appointment expires at the end of the Annual General Meeting. He replaced the late Prof. Dr Dr h. c. mult. Erich Greipl, who died at the beginning of July 2013, as a shareholder representative on the Board. The Annual General Meeting will now take a decision on Raas' continued service on the Supervisory Board. 
Sustainability components planned for Management Board remuneration 
The Annual General Meeting will also be asked to vote on a new system of Management Board remuneration. In future, the issue of sustainability will play a major role in remuneration. Following the vote by the Annual General Meeting, the Management Board plans to modify the remuneration of the company's top managers in a similar fashion. "At METRO GROUP, sustainability is an integral component of the company's strategy in financial, social and environmental terms," said Heiko Hutmacher, the Chief Human Resources Officer. "We believe that it is correct and appropriate to anchor sustainability into the remuneration system for our top managers." The new Sustainable Performance Plan (SPP) should be introduced as from the beginning of the financial year 2013/14. Under the new plan, 25 per cent of the long-term incentive component of Management Board remuneration will be tied to the achievement of sustainability targets in addition to key performance indicators based on the company's share price. The amount of the long-term incentive covering the sustainability components will depend on the ranking that METRO AG achieves in the RobecoSAM Sustainability Assessment in comparison with its competitors in the industry. The ranking put together by the independent Sustainability Rating agency RobecoSAM forms the basis for membership in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, one of the world's leading sustainability indices.  
METRO GROUP with good marks in Sustainalytics Sustainability ranking 
During the first quarter of the financial year 2013/14, the research firm Sustainalytics has given METRO GROUP good sustainability marks: in Sustainalytics' latest ranking, METRO GROUP placed sixth among 72 companies in the food retailers' category. As a result, it obtained the status of outperformer. Sustainalytics specialises in analysing and rating the sustainability activities of companies and countries by using an approach that covers environmental, social and governance (ESG) topics. The strong ranking earned by METRO GROUP's sustainability activities resulted in part from the group-wide cross-product purchasing policies that the company put into place during the short financial year. This policy spells out the fundamental requirements for sustainable supply-chain and procurement management. It also forms the framework for guidelines that address specific issues related to individual product and raw-material categories. This includes the guidelines for palm oil and packaging that were introduced during the short financial year 2013.
